Granting this also entails no fault, just as the fundamental and subsequent [knowledges] are one in essence of wisdom yet perfumed into two. Now this is not yet clear: since active manifestation is one, how could the seeds be two? If it were due to distinct functions, the seeing portion of subsequent knowledge has boundless functions; the self-witnessing and fourth portions should each also have distinct seeds; because functions are distinct, seeds should be even more numerous, so why merely two? Moreover, even if many were perfumed, when producing a single active manifestation later, would they produce one or many? If they produce multiple active manifestations, multiple minds would arise concurrently; that they would arise sequentially does not accord with reason. If they jointly produce one, since the perfuming essence is one and what is produced is also one, why would multiple seeds be perfumed according to the seeing? Forming one according to the essence should reasonably be superior. Master Ci'en establishes non-revelation in the distracted state: for instance, regarding the bhikṣu disciplinary code, at what time is it acquired, and upon what seed is it based? Upon the conclusion of the third karmavācanā, whether the recipient has mind, is mindless, or possesses a mind of the three natures, all are permitted to acquire prātimokṣa non-revelation. This is because the seeds perfumed by the receiving volition that commits the mind to initiating the two karmas of body and speech serve as the basis for the precepts; the initiating volition that directly sets body and speech into motion does not arise at the time of the third karmavācanā, since at that time one merely remains silent before the preceptor. Because that committed mind is now able to be fulfilled, functions on the seeds are doubled, which is named acquiring non-revelation. Although there are multiple explanations, the commentary itself determines that it is an increase in function, not in essence.
