Answer: First, the Hīnayāna Sarvāstivādins say that before the thirty-three minds, the prātimokṣa in a Buddha's person is still called 'not yet attained'. After the thirty-fourth mind, all the previous ones are relinquished, because by attaining the superior one relinquishes the inferior; a distinct, new, uncreated prātimokṣa is born, which is also physical form. The Mahāyāna has two explanations: First, relinquishment through transformation and cessation. That is, uncontaminated seeds have three grades of minds: at the initial entry into the darśanamārga one obtains the lower grade; in the bhāvanāmārga one obtains the middling grade; at the time of buddhahood one obtains the upper grade. Relinquishing the previous inferior grades, only the upper grade exists; how could this upper grade be received from another? Second, relinquishment through transformation and equalization: just as entering the bhāvanāmārga transforms the lower grade to obtain the middling, if one obtains the upper grade, one transforms the middling to obtain the upper; how could this upper grade also be from another? Therefore, neither Buddhas nor pratyekabuddhas receive them from another. Furthermore, the explanation of obtaining and not obtaining prātimokṣa is divided into two, namely Mahāyāna and Hīnayāna, fully as analyzed in the chapter.
