First, the distinction between permanence and impermanence: regarding intrinsic nature, they are impermanent, but in conforming to their underlying nature, they are permanent; when phenomena are subsumed into the nature, they are permanent, while when examining characteristics and functions separately, they are impermanent. Therefore, the Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra, fascicle twenty-two, states: "Good son, conditioned dharmas: arising is also permanent, yet because abiding is impermanent, arising is also impermanent. Abiding is also permanent, yet because arising arises, abiding is also impermanent. Change is also permanent, yet because abiding is impermanent, change is also impermanent. Destruction is also permanent, yet because there is existing now what was previously non-existent, destruction is also impermanent."
