Another explanation holds that the five destinies are also distinct, because the cause of determining distinctiveness (pratiniyamahetu) pervades all phenomena, even though their arising is confused. Question: Although affliction, karma, and rebirth belong to the same realm, they should be distinct across the five destinies. If not, how could unwholesome karma within the human destiny be experienced in another destiny? If one says there is no fixed attribution, retribution should also have no fixed attribution. If one allows that retribution has no fixed attribution, there would be no distinction among the five destinies, just like karma and afflictions. If one says retribution has fixed attribution, affliction and karma should also be so. This principle is somewhat difficult, and the wise should contemplate it: because affliction and karma definitively excel in following retribution, they accord with the cause of determining distinctiveness.
