Regarding the Śāstra's statement: "Moreover, the vipāka mind relies on the defiled manas," and so forth: Why does Asvabhāva give two explanations? The first says that the sixth consciousness is the defiled support; the second agrees with Vasubandhu, namely that it is manas. Why the two differences? Answer: The two treatises do not contradict each other; there are two meanings here: first, that it is constantly continuous; second, that it arises having cognized internal and external [objects], because of sovereign craving. Asvabhāva speaks on the basis of its commonly cognizing internal and external [objects] to give rise to defilement. He does not mention the seventh; Vasubandhu speaks on the basis of the constantly continuous consciousness perpetually giving rise to defilement, which does not mean the sixth does not exist, but because it is not constant, he conceals it and does not state it. Bodhisattva Asvabhāva speaks on the basis of the time of continuing rebirth: it is not that the seventh is absent, but because it does not cognize externally, he also does not state it. However, now the defiled manas spoken of by this master either accords with Vasubandhu, or accords with Asvabhāva; or perhaps the defiled manas is spoken of with reference to the seventh, while the associated compassionate vow is the sixth consciousness. This is used as proof to establish that the eighth takes the sixth and seventh as opening and guiding supports, because the cause of great compassion relies on the sixth, and since defilement would again be the sixth, it would not prove the seventh. Or the intention of this master is to speak provisionally on the basis of one portion of ordinary beings: the consciousness at the initial taking of rebirth can only take rebirth by means of a defiled manas—namely, the final mind of the intermediate aggregate, wherein, except for a wheel-turning king, one must give rise to greed or anger to be able to take rebirth; the associated compassionate vow refers precisely to the two wisdoms.
