Regarding the statement of the *Śāstra*: "Because it takes the referents of collections of names and so forth as its intentional object": "And so forth" includes sentences and phonemes. "Referent" (artha) applies to two kinds: first, the intentional object; second, the principle. That is, taking names and so forth, as well as the meanings they express, both as the intentional object of the mind, not as an object apprehended by the five consciousnesses; this is stated with respect to when one has not attained mastery. However, phonemes are letters; they are not the primary expressing agents, but serve as the support for the two [names and sentences]. By association they are spoken of as possessing expressing significance. The various śāstras state only that names express intrinsic nature and sentences express differences, without separately stating that letters are expressing agents.
