The Samuccaya chapter seven divides definite and indefinite into three. It says: As the sūtra speaks of determinate karma, it refers to karma whose performance is determinate, karma whose ripening is determinate, and karma whose state is determinate. Performance of karma applies to both definite and indefinite; determinate experience is indefinite, the reason for which will be explained later. The state is determinate, because both time and retribution are determinate. Yogācārabhūmi chapter sixty, based on definite and indefinite, generally speaks of four karmas. It says: Furthermore, there are four karmas: (1) determinate ripening; (2) determinate time; (3) both determinate; (4) both indefinite. The third is definite, and the remaining three are indefinite. Although the experience of retribution is definite according to the first, its time is indefinite. In the second, the time is definite, but the retribution is indefinite; therefore, both are indefinite.
