Regarding the passage beginning with 'As for the attainment of cessation…', the original commentary and Ximing each explain it as in their respective commentaries. The Yaoji states: 'Some explain its intention as: here it is spoken solely with reference to the trainees and non-trainees of the two vehicles. As for the bodhisattvas, they are only spoken of in the text below. Another explanation holds that its intention is: this applies generally to trainees and non-trainees of the three vehicles, clarifying the persons who attain the attainment of cessation; and below "needing to sever the afflictions of the three realms", it clarifies initial arising and subsequent arising, wherein it first speaks of the two vehicles and later clarifies the bodhisattvas. If it were not so, the persons attaining the attainment of cessation would not include the Tathāgata, and the principle would be incomplete.' Now I maintain that this judgment is entirely inappropriate. The intention of the original commentary was to set aside those persons who cannot attain it; excluding those who are thus set aside, it demonstrates that all others attain it—how could it fail to encompass [the Tathāgata]? To conjecture arbitrarily like this occurs throughout such passages; below I shall merely point them out in brief, being unable to fully expose each and every error; let seekers reflect carefully.
