Regarding the statement that the preliminary dhyānas of the first two [absorptions] are called the joy of mental gladdening: according to fascicle fifty-seven of the Yogācāra, there are eleven faculties. Below in this treatise, it is established that the preliminary dhyānas of the first two definitely lack the faculty of pleasure; therefore, there are only eleven, as explained in the Commentary. However, the Commentary infers the meaning: since it quotes the sūtra text, 'pleasure and joy born of seclusion,' because the sūtra speaks of joy, this proves that there is joy; since the sūtra also speaks of pleasure, why should there not be pleasure? According to this principle, it ought to possess the faculty of pleasure. It is merely that it does not fully elucidate it and speaks of eleven faculties. It is not that two interpretations are permitted here, because the text below decisively determines that there is no faculty of pleasure.
