Question: Among the six fundamental defilements and the twenty secondary defilements, only eleven are inverted to become the eleven wholesome factors; why are the remaining fifteen not inverted? Answer: The master of Ximing explains: As to why they are not inverted, first, it is because they do not determinately belong to a single wholesome factor; second, it is because they either belong to purely wholesome factors or enter into miscellaneous categories of wholesome factors. Now I say this is not so. Anger, hatred, and the like determinately belong to non-hatred and enter into the purely wholesome, not being in miscellaneous categories. Rather, it should be as the treatise states: first, they have distinct characteristics and functions; second, they pervade the six consciousnesses; third, they obstruct supreme causes. Because those factors such as anger lack distinct characteristics and functions, do not pervade the six consciousnesses, and do not obstruct supreme causes, they are not separately inverted and established as wholesome doctrines. For example, diligence counteracts negligence; by diligence, all mundane and supramundane wholesome factors are brought to fulfillment, preventing evil and cultivating good. Because of this superiority, it is distinctively established. That the others are not established should be understood according to this.
