Another interpretation: The original intent was that the two hindrances each have two [grades], not distinguishing a medium grade, because they are respectively coarse or subtle, easy or difficult to sever. In combining the two hindrances there are four grades of distinct severance; there are also five interpretations here, their logic following what was explained before. Following the addition of that logic, there should also be six interpretations, the meaning likewise being as before. Another interpretation: The two hindrances are each divided into superior and lower; the lower grade of the two hindrances must each be severed separately, because it is the initial severance. The superior grade of the two hindrances is then severed jointly in combination, because one can regenerate the path that severs hindrances. Because one previously severed those two lower grades, one takes the lower grade of afflictions as the lower, the lower grade of the cognitive [hindrance] as the medium (because relative to the first it is difficult), and the superior grades of both as the superior, because they are difficult to sever. Since they are severed in three grades, there are four interpretations therein: The first says seven mind-[moments]: three uninterrupted paths, three paths of liberation, and generating one advanced path to enter the path of seeing with marks. The second says six mind-[moments]: from the true entering into marks without generating an advanced path. The third says five mind-[moments]: the subsequent uninterrupted path is the liberation of the preceding, while in severing the third grade one separately generates a liberation, and from the true entering into marks generates one advanced path. The fourth says four mind-[moments]: omitting the advanced path. The doctrine of the master of sudden severance has eleven interpretations. First, in severing the two hindrances in three grades each, each having lower, medium, and superior combined jointly into three, there are four theories: The first says seven mind-[moments]: three uninterrupted, three liberations, and generating one advanced path to enter the path of seeing with marks. The second says six mind-[moments]: omitting the advanced path. The third says five mind-[moments]: the subsequent uninterrupted path serves as the preceding liberation, and after the third uninterrupted path one generates liberation and one advanced path. The fourth says four mind-[moments]: omitting the advanced path.
