Answer: Although no scriptural text has been seen, inferring it by principle now: these individuals have previously planted the wholesome roots of the aids to penetration, and then encountered tīrthika conditions. Or, through the power of prior habituation, they were able to separate partially or completely from desire, and upon turning their minds toward the Hīnayāna, they enter into the seeing of the truths in this very life. Why? If it were granted that they enter into the seeing of the truths only after undergoing rebirth: if they have completely separated from desire and do not fall away from the higher concentration, upon death they are reborn in the form realm, where they cannot enter the seeing [path]. If they have partially separated from desire, upon undergoing rebirth they immediately regress, and the previously suppressed afflictions are brought forward again in active manifestation; when entering the path of seeing, how could they sever them accordingly? It would be like others who enter the seeing of the truths without having suppressed them. If they had never aroused the aids to penetration, it would be impossible for them to turn their minds and immediately enter seeing in the present life; for no one cultivates and enters sageliness within a single lifetime, as three lifetimes or the like are required before entering sageliness. However, that sūtras and treatises do not speak of previously arousing the aids to penetration and so forth is due to concealment and brevity.
