Regarding the path of liberation (vimuktimārga): there are two kinds of liberation. First, the entity that can liberate attains mastery, which is freedom from bonds, as in the eight liberations. The present liberation is also like this: being able to eliminate coarseness and heaviness, it receives the name of liberation. Second, the principle that is revealed is named liberation; intrinsically free from bonds, it is named liberation. Formerly, defilement hindrances prevented wisdom from realizing it; now, having eliminated defilements, wisdom is only then able to realize it. Liberation is the principle, while the path is wisdom; hence the ninth fascicle of the Samuccaya says: "That is, by this path one realizes the liberation obtained from severing defilements." If relying on the former explanation, it is also a karmadhāraya compound. The treatises mostly rely on the latter, which is a tatpuruṣa compound: the path of liberation. Why is it so? To differentiate it from the uncontaminated path of superior progress, it is named as a tatpuruṣa compound.
