Answer: From the stage of adhimukti-caryā onward, they are all called bodhisattvas of the acquired gotra. The gotra of original nature is based on the innate anāsrava seeds prior to generating the aspiration [for awakening]; the acquired gotra is based on the seeds perfumed and formed after generating the aspiration. The Bodhisattvabhūmi (Dichi lun) states: If it is obtained through previously cultivating wholesome [dharmas], it is named the acquired gotra. When Yogācārabhūmi 35 says, "It refers to what is obtained through previously habituating roots of wholesomeness; this is named what is accomplished through practice," this is spoken in terms of manifest characteristics to distinguish it from what has not yet been perfumed through habituation; it does not mean that initial practice is not called the acquired nature. Thus Abhidharmasamuccayavyākhyā 13 states that there are four [factors] conforming to liberation: first, conforming to liberation based on reliance, which means that from the desire for wholesome dharmas up to seeking liberation, all are called factors conforming to liberation. Since they are named "factors conforming to liberation", they are therefore the acquired gotra.
