Categories such as the defilements are called affliction and harm. The four [pleasures], such as that of going forth from home, are free from this affliction, and are therefore called pleasures; freedom from affliction is itself pleasure. The pleasure of going forth from home has faith and morality as its essence, or, being free from distress, the body and mind are gratified, so it has joy and pleasure as its essence. The pleasure of seclusion has the joy and pleasure of the first dhyāna [as its essence], or it takes the five factors in their entirety as its essence. The pleasure of pacification, on the second dhyāna and above, has four factors or five factors as its essence, depending on the case; or it only has joy and pleasure as its essence, as appropriate.
