According to that treatise, one must possess four virtues before one may compose a treatise: First, toward past teachers, one should be free from arrogance, lacking such a mind as: 'Past teachers could still compose treatises, so how could I not compose one now?' Second, toward sentient beings, one should give rise to great compassion, contemplating thus: 'If I do not compose a treatise, immeasurable sentient beings will certainly fall away from wholesome phenomena.' There are other sentient beings who fall into birth, aging, sickness, and death; it is because of these sentient beings that I compose a treatise. If they are able to understand even a single sentence of the well-spoken, wondrous meaning, saying, 'So it is! So it is! I shall practice accordingly!', then throughout the long night they will certainly obtain great meaning, benefit, peace, and happiness. Third, toward fellow practitioners, one should deeply produce respect and affection, contemplating thus: 'If I do not compose a treatise, wishing to benefit others, those fellow practitioners will certainly fall away from deeds of benefiting others.' Fourth, one does not desire to display one's own superior skills and abilities, lacking such a mind as: 'May the world all say of me that I am intelligent, brilliant, and wise, capable of composing treatises and elucidating meanings, and so give rise to deep pure faith, whereby I may abundantly obtain offerings and respect.' Only for the sake of the increase of one's own and others' wholesome roots, with an untainted mind, may one then compose a treatise.
