略為四釋：一云，「上」字誤也，應為「者」字。二云，「此上」等言皆是發端，意雖明此，兼言上也。三云，「今造」等言皆標舉等，在「此」字上，故言「此上」。四云，「今造此論」一句之言是是發端等，由前別明今造等訖故，總指云「此上」，即是發端等也。然四釋中初解省過，思之可悉。有云：「今造此論」四字之上，一一皆具發端等四。又發端等，一一別配「今造此論」。

Briefly, there are four explanations: First, it is said that the word 'above' (*shang*) is an error and should be the word 'aspect' (*zhe*). Second, it is said that the words 'above this' and so on are all the commencement; although the intention is to explain this, it also mentions 'above'. Third, it is said that the words 'now composing' and so on are all indicating and so forth, which precede the word 'this' (*ci*), hence it says 'above this'. Fourth, it is said that the single phrase 'now composing this treatise' is the commencement and so on; because what precedes separately explained 'now composing' and so on having concluded, it collectively points to it saying 'above this', which is the commencement and so on. However, among the four explanations, the first avoids faults; pondering it, this can be understood. Some say: on each of the four characters 'now', 'composing', 'this', and 'treatise', each possesses all four [functions] such as the commencement. Furthermore, commencement and the others are each separately matched to [one of] 'now', 'composing', 'this', and 'treatise'.
