Briefly, there are two explanations: First, because the truth revealed by suppressing afflictions is a small part of true nirvāṇa, it is called "partial." Second, it is said that all pure concentrations of the four dhyānas and so forth, because they suppress afflictions, possess the meaning of tranquility and are called nirvāṇa; because they are conditioned, they are called "partial." "Part" means having the sense of a similar category: in terms of the aspect of being without delusion, they have the sense of tranquility and are somewhat similar to true nirvāṇa; therefore, they are called "partial." Thus the Yogācārabhūmi, fascicle 12, states: "The four dhyānas are also called partial nirvāṇa, because a part of the afflictions is severed and because it is not decisive, they are called partial nirvāṇa." The latter explanation is the fundamental one; although the former lacks textual authority, its principle is admissible.
