Following the text of the Commentary, there are only five syllogisms (pramāṇa); but formulated back and forth, there are altogether eight syllogisms, condensed into four pairs. In the second pair, the Commentary's text provides both; in the other three pairs, the Commentary gives only one syllogism merely to indicate the direction. First, the refutation that the aggregate phenomenon is identical to the distinct ones: The Commentary states from 'The aggregate phenomenon such as the mahat…' to 'the objection is also like this.' Second, the refutation that the aggregate aspect is identical to the entity: The Commentary states 'Furthermore, the three subtle things… like the aggregate aspect'; the text contains both the direct and reverse syllogisms. Third, the refutation that the aggregate aspect is not one: The Commentary states 'The aggregate aspect of the three things… like the original three things.' Fourth, the refutation that the distinct aspects are three: The Commentary states 'The distinct aspects of the three things… like the mahat and so forth'; the reverse case can be understood by analogy. Some say there are six syllogisms in three pairs, but that reasoning is not exhaustive.
