According to the Yogācārabhūmi, fascicle twenty-seven, which recounts their doctrine: The Vibhajyavādins hold this view: the nature of the mind is originally pure, but because it is defiled by adventitious afflictions (āgantuka-kleśa), its manifestation is not pure. It also says: Defiled and undefiled minds are not different in substance; that is, if the corresponding afflictions are not yet severed, it is called a defiled mind, and when they have been severed, it is called an undefiled mind. The intention of that school is: From beginningless time, the substance of the mind is inherently pure, and because afflictions arise, it is called defiled; defilement is not the beginningless original nature of the mind, and therefore the designation 'adventitious' is established.
