答：且本質微第八所變，非識外故，不同餘宗，故說名假。然有質礙故說為實，本質極微異熟相故不熏成種，其影像微非如本質有質礙用，故說為假；作所緣緣生眼識故，說為實有，影像相微熏成種子。不爾，後識無影像故。

Answer: First, the fundamental atom is transformed by the eighth consciousness and is not outside consciousness; unlike other schools, it is therefore called designated. However, because it possesses material obstruction, it is said to be real; being an aspect of maturation (vipāka), the fundamental atom does not perfume to form seeds. The reflected image atom does not have the obstructive function like the fundamental material basis, and is therefore said to be designated; functioning as an objective condition to produce visual consciousness, it is said to be substantially real; the reflected image atom perfumes to form seeds. Were it not so, subsequent consciousness would lack an image.
