There is an opinion: [The uncommunicative form born of] meditation and the Path is also established based on volition arisen from vows; that is, when about to generate that meditation or Path discipline, one vows: 'I shall enter concentration for such an amount of time; through this I will be able to induce superior volition to ward off evil matter,' which is nominally designated uncommunicative [form]. Furthermore, in terms of intrinsic nature, it is said to be based only on volition; if including its retinue, it is established based on the co-arising mind and mental factors, an interpretation that also does not conflict, because the ability to ward off evil disciplines applies to all associated factors. Just as the substance of the two absorptions (samāpatti), when spoken of in terms of its retinue, is established based on the seeds of the twenty-two minds, etc.; but if in terms of intrinsic nature, it is established only upon the seeds of the disgust-producing wisdom—so it must be here, because the Sage said it is based on volition, which is the intrinsic nature of karma.
