Answer: When the inferior innately acquired good is already absent at that time, how could the superior preparatory good exist? Furthermore, during the preparatory stage of severing the wholesome roots, those expedient wholesome [states] have already ceased to arise, and only afterward is the innately acquired good severed. If it were not so, by what power could that wrong-view mind sever the innately acquired good? For this reason, it is stated in general that wrong view severs the wholesome [roots]. The preparation for wrong view is also called wrong view, which severs both preparatory and innately acquired good. If fundamental wrong view is called wrong view, when saying that the view severs wholesome [roots], it only severs the innately acquired. Therefore, when the sacred teachings speak of severing the wholesome [roots], their scope varies in breadth, and one should reconcile them in this way.
