按《婆沙論》四十五中而釋名云：「尊者世友作如是說，能令有情起異類見、異類煩惱，造異類業，受異類生，故名異生。復次，能令有情墮異界故，往異趣故，受異生故，名異生性。」

According to the explanation of the name in fascicle forty-five of the Vibhāṣā: 'The Venerable Vasumitra stated: It can cause sentient beings to generate distinct views, distinct defilements, create distinct karma, and undergo distinct births; hence it is called ordinary person (pṛthagjana). Furthermore, because it causes sentient beings to fall into distinct realms, go to distinct destinies, and receive distinct births, it is called the state of an ordinary person (pṛthagjanatva).'
