Examination: We now adopt the latter explanation. Just as when followers of the two vehicles turn toward the Mahāyāna and reach the first bhūmi, they are said to attain the noble nature. If obtaining a lesser noble status meant one were entirely called a noble one, without any sense of being an ordinary person, why would reaching the first bhūmi be called attaining the noble state? If it is said that obtaining that Mahāyāna noble nature is called attaining the noble state, why, before obtaining the Mahāyāna, would one not be called an ordinary person? Furthermore, this text merely says that not achieving the noble [dharmas] is called an ordinary person; it does not say that acquiring a small fraction means one is entirely called a noble one.
