改彼勝論所說同句以為同分，名「翻勝論」。故《俱舍論》第五云：又應顯成勝論所執，彼宗執有總同義句，於一切法總同，言智由此發生。有云：善妙談論名為勝論，翻此妙論云「我不立」，理亦難知，經許假有；今翻為無有違教失，故云難知。

Altering the category of 'generality' (sāmānya) spoken of by the Vaiśeṣika to become generic similarity is called 'modifying the Vaiśeṣika.' Hence the fifth fascicle of the Kośa says: 'Moreover, this would establish the doctrine maintained by the Vaiśeṣika. That school maintains that there is a universal category of generality, through which the universal concept and cognition of identity arises in all dharmas.' Some say: Eloquent and subtle discussion is called 'superior treatise' (vaiśeṣika); reversing this subtle treatise to say 'I do not establish it' has a principle that is also difficult to understand, for the sūtras allow nominal existence; now to reverse it into non-existence entails the fault of contradicting the teachings, hence it is said to be difficult to understand.
