詳曰：護法既許新、舊合用，命根所依亦應如是，或唯依舊，或唯依新，或通依二，遇緣即依不可定判。又但許依新、舊二種，不言一切皆悉總依，言所依種要前生熏，即唯新舊，如何斷取前之所釋？

Examination: Since Dharmapāla accepts the combined functioning of newly perfumed and innate seeds, that upon which the life-faculty relies should likewise be so: either relying solely on the innate, or solely on the new, or generally on both, relying as conditions are met, and cannot be definitively fixed. Moreover, he merely allows reliance on both new and innate seeds, not saying that it relies collectively on all seeds. To say that the seed upon which it relies must have been perfumed in a previous life means it is only newly perfumed; how could one decisively accept the former explanation?
