There are briefly two interpretations: The first says that because one is not yet able to understand the particular characteristics of phenomena, names cannot yet exist; the phrasing is skillfully concise, and the rest is to be interpreted by analogy with this. The second says that although there are many syllables (akṣara), because one is not yet able to understand the intrinsic nature of phenomena, there must be names; sentences are to be understood by analogy with this. This clarifies the reason for establishing the three—names, sentences, and phonemes—without adopting verses (gāthā). Therefore the conclusion below states: 'Not speaking separately of verses.' The latter interpretation is superior.
