能生果法名為功能，現行色根能生識果，據此假說現行色根，名為功能，功能即是種子異名。

The phenomena capable of producing an effect are named "potentiality" (śakti). The actual material faculties can produce the effect of consciousness; based on this, the actual material faculties are metaphorically called "potentialities," and potentiality is another name for seeds.
