Question: Since it says "transformed," among the eight consciousnesses, how many are the transforming consciousnesses? Traditionally there are three explanations: The first says: Excluding only the sixth, it shows the remaining seven consciousnesses; what is transformed by the sixth is the direct object (pratyakṣālambana), because the text below separately states that it gives rise to its own mental image and grasps it as a dharma. The second says: It applies to all eight; although what is transformed by the sixth is the direct object, the opening text speaks generally, and only below does it distinguish the direct objective condition, so there is also no fault. The third says: It reveals only the sixth mental consciousness, and is thereby said to be solely the direct object. Since it is the direct object, the aggregates, sensory bases, and elements are solely defiled, identical with the previously mentioned aggregates of grasping, differing only in division and combination. An opinion determines: If it is what is transformed by consciousness, it is the direct object; how could it further say that it gives rise to its own mental image? Therefore, only following the explanation in the Commentary is correct.
