Answer: To begin with, the cognition of others' minds has broadly three kinds: First, that attained by the Tathāgatas and by bodhisattvas on the eighth ground and above, where meditative concentration and supernormal knowledges are undivided. Second, that attained by the two vehicles, by bodhisattvas on the seventh ground and below, and that cultivated and attained by ordinary beings; this arises reliant on meditative concentration, yet is not identical to meditative concentration, and again is not the same as the scattered. Third, that attained as retribution, which is purely a scattered mind. If it arises reliant on meditative concentration, it is termed valid perceptual cognition; that attained as retribution is not like this. Because among the aggregates of [the cognition of] others' minds there are those that are not valid perceptual cognition, it is said to be 'not valid perception'—it does not refer to all of them. Thus the meaning of valid perceptual cognition in the cognition of others' minds is not pervasive. If it is the self-verifying part (svasaṃvitti-bhāga), the meaning of valid perceptual cognition is fully complete; therefore the cognition of others' minds is set aside and the self-verifying part is taken.
