2.957

由以自證為能緣故，故依見分。見分不許緣於種子，不依自證，其第四分不離第三別有體性，故但三分。有說，護月種無別體，但依賴耶識上功能假說種子，故自證分緣見分時亦名緣種，無別相故非見所緣。復有說云，依心自體故自證緣。

Because the svasaṃvitti-bhāga is the apprehending subject, [the seeds] rely on the darśana-bhāga. If the darśana-bhāga is not permitted to take seeds as its object, they do not rely on the svasaṃvitti-bhāga. Since the fourth part does not have a separate entity apart from the third, there are only three parts. Some say that according to Candragupta seeds have no distinct entity, but are merely metaphorically designated seeds based on the functional capacity in the ālaya-vijñāna; therefore when the svasaṃvitti-bhāga takes the darśana-bhāga as its object, it is also said to take seeds as its object, and because there is no distinct form, they are not an object of the darśana-bhāga. Still others say that because they rely on the mind's own entity, they are an object of the svasaṃvitti-bhāga.
