Answer: According to Fascicle 51 of the Yogācārabhūmi: Due to five causes. First, because the ālaya consciousness has as its cause the actions created in previous lifetimes, whereas the evolving consciousnesses such as the eye [consciousness] have present conditions as their causes, namely the faculties, spheres, and so forth. Second, the six consciousnesses are found to have the three natures. Third, the six consciousnesses are non-obscured and indeterminate, subsumed under retribution, whose homogeneous continuity cannot be maintained. Fourth, the six consciousnesses individually depend on their respective bases and evolve depending on their respective consciousnesses; thus those bases would have appropriation, while the rest would lack appropriation. Even if appropriation were admitted, it would not be logically sound, because the consciousnesses become separated. Fifth, furthermore, there would be the fault that their bases would repeatedly undergo appropriation. Why is this? Because that eye consciousness evolves at one time and does not evolve at another time, and the other consciousnesses are likewise; the eighth is different from them, and therefore it is capable of appropriation.
