現行第八望根與種，具緣、執二，外器但緣其種子識，對現七識唯生一變；現望現七，三變俱無。若種子識望現根、器，即生名變。器亦是識，共相種生。疏示方隅，且舉現識。現識及種合而言之，根具三變，外器二變。

The active eighth consciousness relative to the faculties and seeds possesses both: taking them as objects and appropriating them. The external receptacle is merely taken as an object. The consciousness of seeds, relative to the active seven consciousnesses, has only the single transformation of producing; the active [eighth] relative to the active seven lacks all three transformations. If it is the consciousness of seeds relative to the active faculties and receptacle, it is called transforming by virtue of producing. The receptacle is also consciousness, produced from seeds of common characteristics. The Commentary merely indicates a general direction and temporarily adduces the active consciousness. Taking the active consciousness and seeds together: the faculties possess three transformations, and the external receptacle possesses two transformations.
