Answer: The old version says "root consciousness"; the root consciousness is restricted to one, and stating that it resembles those [objects] constitutes its fault. The new version says "arising of consciousness"; consciousness applies generally to the eight consciousnesses, which cognize the self and so forth accordingly, and hence there is no fault. The commentary to the new treatise states: "Transforming to resemble objects" means appearing in resemblance to the nature of objects such as form; "transforming to resemble sentient beings" means appearing in resemblance to the five sensory faculties of one's own and others' bodies; "transforming to resemble the self" means the defiled manas is always associated with self-delusion and so forth; "transforming to resemble discernment" refers to the remaining six consciousnesses, because their aspects of discernment are coarse.
