Detailed analysis: For example, when bodhisattvas and others transform their bodies into fish, earth, sea, gold, or curds, do sentient beings of the lower realm receive and use them or not? If they do not receive and use them, what benefit is there in transforming them? If you grant that they use them, how could the eighth [consciousness] of those sentient beings not take them as objects? If they were to use them without taking them as objects, that would not be vijñapti-mātra. Therefore, we know that, induced by the power of another's supernormal power, one is able to transform a body, vessel, and so forth of a different plane; that very supporting matter is called 'body,' for fish, gold, curds, and the like are not of the desire realm. If, in defense, it is said that the six consciousnesses of sentient beings rely on the rice and the like transformed by the bodhisattva and others as the mūla-dharmin, transforming it before using it—just as the upper [realm's] eye cognizes the three disasters below by relying on what is transformed by the lower [realm's] eighth as its mūla-dharmin—this also is not so. Even if it takes what is transformed by one's own six consciousnesses as its object, if the eighth consciousness is said from the root to be 'due to the power of supernormal powers,' what harm is there in that? For it is not the same object as in other, ordinary times. Earlier it was said that the upper eye relies on the lower eighth. Because the upper eighth cannot cognize below. Why is this so? If the upper eighth were to transform the lower disasters on its own, since the coarse and the subtle are separated, it would have no utility for it; if it were to rely on the disasters transformed by the lower eighth as the mūla-dharmin before transforming, what utility would there be in transforming again? Furthermore, it is not induced by meditative concentration or supernormal powers. Therefore it does not transform them. If transforming into fish and rice has utility, and is furthermore induced by the power of supernormal powers, how can the two cases be compared? If on account of the distinction between coarse and subtle it were not permitted to transform them, then the remaining six consciousnesses likewise should not cognize them, since coarse and subtle are separated.
