The Commentary's explanation of the two transformations—by causal condition (hetupratyaya) and by discrimination (vikalpa)—has four explanations in total; if one adopts the fourth explanation and examines it, it can be understood. Another opinion gives three explanations: One says that only the mind of direct perception (pratyakṣa) is called transformation by causal condition, whereas all inference (anumāna) and non-valid cognition (pramāṇābhāsa) are transformation by discrimination. The second says that the eighth consciousness's king and mental factors are called transformation by causal condition, while the remaining citta and caitasikas are called transformation by discrimination. The third says that only the eighth citta-king is transformation by causal condition, while its associated caitasikas are also transformation by discrimination. This is Dharmapāla's position, because holding seeds and receiving perfuming belongs solely to the citta-king. He himself evaluates that the first two have many faults, while the third is tenable.
