I examine: Looking at both positions from the sidelines, both meanings are incomplete. If ideation does not give rise to speech, why does the Treatise state, 'only then can it subsequently give rise to various nominal designations'? To what does the phrase 'only then can' refer? Although they are distinguished as gross and subtle, they do not distinguish between direct and indirect; can both gross and subtle causes directly issue speech so that the terminology would be flawed? Consequently, one should rely on the explanations in the Shuyao and the Deng.
