The answer is: whenever association is spoken of, though it is mind and mental factors, mind and mental factors are not associated universally in their entirety, so they must be delimited. If mind and mental factors were called associated in their entirety, those with distinct intentional objects would be called associated, so they are delimited by 'equality of intentional object'; mental factors of preceding and subsequent moments that share intentional objects would be called associated, so they are delimited by 'identity of time'; the simultaneous arising of various consciousnesses would be called associated, so they are delimited by 'identity of support'; the sixth and eighth consciousnesses sharing a support would be called associated, so they are delimited by 'equality of substance'. The second says: The Treatise explains them in proper sequence, because even though they have an identical support, they are not associated. If they were called associated merely by having an identical support, the sixth and eighth consciousnesses would be called associated, so it delimits them by intentional object. When the sixth and eighth consciousnesses at times cognize the same intentional object, they would be associated, so it delimits them by substance. The latter explanation is correct.
