初執受證而有五因，今此所言當彼五中第一因也。故《對法》云：謂阿賴耶識先行因滅，眼等轉識現緣因發。如說根、境作意力故，諸轉識生，是名初因。

The first proof of appropriation has five causes; what is spoken of here corresponds to the first cause among those five. Thus the Abhidharmasamuccaya-bhāṣya states: The prior cause of the ālaya-vijñāna ceases, and the evolving consciousnesses such as the eye [consciousness] are issued due to present conditions. As it says: through the force of faculties, objects, and attention, the various evolving consciousnesses arise; this is called the first cause.
