According to the Mahāyānasaṃgraha: It is seen to be explained in various places exclusively within the Mahāyāna. That is, the ālaya-vijñāna is said to be the substance of the basis of what is to be known, while the three natures—other-dependent, imagined, and thoroughly established—are said to be the characteristics of what is to be known. Asabhāva's commentary states: "It should be known, hence it is called 'what is to be known' (jñeya). 'Basis' (āśraya) means that which is relied upon; this word 'basis' specifically selects the dependent defiled and pure conditioned dharmas, excluding unconditioned dharmas, because they lack the meaning of having a basis. The basis is precisely the ālaya-vijñāna, because it is their cause and because it can lead to them."
