This takes the conventional cognition of the Sarvāstivāda school as an analogy. 'Cognitions of the three kinds' refers to the subsequent cognitions of the three truths of suffering, origination, and cessation. After giving rise to the direct realization of these subsequent cognitions, one can concurrently cultivate the defiled conventional cognitions that know suffering, abandon origination, and realize cessation. Since this conventional cognition is cultivated at the conclusion of the direct realization of these three subsequent cognitions, it is called 'at the edge of direct realization'. Therefore, the Abhidharmakośa, fascicle 26, states: 'Only at the time of the three subsequent cognitions of suffering, origination, and cessation can one concurrently cultivate the conventional cognition at the edge of future direct realization. Only at the conclusion of the direct realization of each single truth can one concurrently cultivate it; thus this name is established.'
