Answer: Since it states that the final [moment] is a maturation dharma, this does not hinder the initial and middle [moments] from being accompanied by craving; because the intentions of the two treatises differ, they do not contradict each other. Furthermore, because of the arousal of craving, one is able to connect life [in rebirth]; both the time of death and the intermediate state are able to arouse craving, and therefore taking both states is likewise without error. Although there are four explanations, the first and last are superior, while the middle two contradict reason. Defiled thought connects rebirth, and at the time of actually undergoing rebirth, in the state of the kalala, there is no defiled thought; therefore the first fascicle of the Yogācārabhūmi made this statement based on having already connected rebirth, and because it is not the actual connection of rebirth, there is no fault. That is, the fifty-ninth fascicle of the Yogācārabhūmi states: "Furthermore, when about to undergo rebirth, lust and craving are active in relation to one's own body, and toward male or female either love or hatred is also active." From this causal condition, one should know that all afflictions can connect the continuity of rebirth. The words "when about to undergo rebirth" and "arousing craving," and so forth, clearly show that the state of rebirth-existence is not the state of connecting rebirth. As for the meaning of connecting rebirth and so on, it means grasping the fruit by means of the cause, just as a blossom forms fruit; hence it is called "connecting rebirth." Therefore Asabhāva's Mahāyānasaṃgraha, fascicle three, states: "Because it embraces rebirth, it is called 'connecting rebirth.'" The subsequent retribution continues the previous one, so that this life is not broken off, just as a son succeeds his father; hence it is called "continuity." That is, that treatise says: "Because it maintains and connects life, it is called 'continuity.'"
