Answer: There are three reasonable explanations. One says: The name ālaya is obtained solely based on the self-love of the seventh [consciousness]; that the treatise explains it based solely on the sixth is because it is addressed to another school. The second says: It applies to both the sixth and seventh consciousnesses, and the name is obtained from self-love, because grasping and storing through self-love makes no distinction. Even if there are places stating that it is based only on the seventh, one should know that this is explicitly stated based on continuous succession, such that the name is not relinquished in the fourth ground. That relinquishment is spoken of only upon reaching the eighth ground is because it is spoken based on the place where it is definitively exhausted; however, those two treatises explain it in response to the other [school]. The third says: The acquisition of the name is as stated by the second master above; between the two treatises, it relies commonly on both the sixth and seventh. Furthermore, Asabhāva's explanation of loving the ālaya is not in terms of the three times, and because it is a general statement, it applies to the seventh. Vasubandhu's later explanation, explaining the name "love," also applies to the seventh, because it takes the present storehouse consciousness as its object and loves it as a self; thus there is no contradiction in principle.
