If according to the provisional doctrine (saṃvṛti-satya / teaching conforming to capacity), matter is permitted to maintain seeds; if according to the ultimate doctrine, once the ālaya is established, only the eighth [consciousness] can maintain seeds. Hence Yogācārabhūmi fascicle 51 says: 'What is the conditioning cause (hetu-pratyaya)? It refers to the material sense-faculties, the supports of the faculties, and consciousness. These two, briefly stated, can maintain the seeds of all dharmas. Following upon the material sense-faculties are the seeds of the material sense-faculties, the seeds of other material dharmas, and the seeds of all minds and mental factors, etc. Following upon consciousness are the seeds of all consciousnesses, the seeds of other immaterial dharmas, the seeds of the material sense-faculties, and the seeds of the remaining material dharmas. It should be known that the intrinsic nature of the remaining material dharmas is followed only by its own seeds, except for the primary element matter, because the primary element matter is followed by two kinds of seeds, namely the seeds of the primary elements and the seeds of derived matter. Precisely this established continuity of differentiated seeds following along, corresponding appropriately with respect to the dharmas spoken of, is termed conditioning cause. If the material sense-faculties and their own primary elements were not followed by the seeds of minds and mental factors, then upon entering the cessation absorption, entering the non-conceptual absorption, or being born in the non-conceptual heaven, consciousness and so forth should not arise again later... If consciousnesses were not followed by material seeds, then for ordinary beings born in the formless realm, when their lifespan and karma are exhausted there and after dying they are reborn below, matter without seeds should not arise again.' Those minds, matter, and so forth must necessarily arise again; therefore, one should know that the seeds of mind, matter, and so forth follow along with mind and matter. With this as condition, mind and matter arise again. This established principle of seeds should be known as being stated provisionally according to the sacred teachings before the ālaya-vijñāna was established. If the ālaya-vijñāna is already established, one should know that, briefly stated, the seeds of all dharmas entirely rely on the ālaya.
