釋曰：染污因初，無斷第二，是第一增。故不可知是第二增，故名重增。初和合位若是意識，自所緣境即令了知。既不可知，明知彼位識非是意，論文示法，思可知也。

Explanation: The defilement reason is the first, uninterruptedness is the second and serves as the first reinforcement; thus ungraspability is the second reinforcement, and hence called a 'further reinforcement'. If it were mental consciousness at the stage of initial concordance, it would make its own cognitive object cognizable. Since it cannot be known, it is clear that the consciousness at that stage is not mental consciousness. The treatise text indicates the doctrine, which can be understood by contemplation.
