Examination: The two are mutually deficient. The former master lacks an explanation of the phrase 'one class' and fails to exhaust the principle of 'multiple bases'; the latter master fails to distinguish the meaning of 'multiple bases'. Now one should state: just as the simultaneously existing support-faculties of the eye and other consciousnesses are four in total—namely, the same-object, discriminatory, defiling/purifying, and fundamental [bases], as Dharmapāla explains in this Treatise—it is because the bases are not one that they are called 'multiple bases'. The intent of the treatise speaks solely of simultaneously existing faculties; one cannot take the immediately preceding basis to elucidate the primary citta and mental factors. What distinguishes them from matter and so on is called 'one class'.
