These various teachings have been repeatedly cited throughout the Commentary and the Deng. However, for a teacher to consult and examine them when confronting the treatise is quite taxing to the spirit, so I will now briefly restate them. The first master objects: The Yogācārabhūmi, fascicle 1, states: When visual consciousness arises, three minds can be obtained: instantaneous, inquiring, and determining. Furthermore, fascicle 3 states: Once the five consciousnesses have arisen for a single moment, immediately after this mental consciousness definitely arises; this means the five consciousnesses induce and generate the mental consciousness. Furthermore, both the first master and the second master object: The Yogācārabhūmi also states: Only after the determining mind are there defilement and purity; after this, there is the function of the flowing eye consciousness as wholesome or unwholesome. Furthermore, the Saṃdhinirmocana-sūtra and others also say: The five consciousnesses are induced by the mind; this means the five consciousnesses are induced and generated by the mind. The second master says: Furthermore, as the Mahāyānasaṃgraha, the Mahāyānasūtrālaṃkāra, the Buddhabhūmi-sūtra, and so forth all state in their intent: transforming the seventh consciousness attains the equality-nature knowledge; transforming the eighth consciousness attains the mirror-like knowledge. This means that by means of the sixth mental consciousness at the stage of the supreme mundane dharma, the pure consciousness associated with the equality-nature knowledge is induced and generated. The sixth and seventh consciousnesses associated with the two knowledges of observation and equality induce and generate the pure consciousness associated with the mirror knowledge. Furthermore, the vipāka-vijñāna relies on the defiled mind; as the Abhidharmasamuccaya-bhāṣya states, or it relies on the wholesome mind associated with compassionate vows—this means that the sāsrava and anāsrava sixth and seventh induce the sāsrava eighth.
