心、意、識三皆有通別。若緣慮名心，依止名意，了別名識，此即通名，八識皆有此三名故。若積集名心，思量為意，了麁名識，乃是別名，如次別屬第八、七、六。

The three—citta, manas, and vijñāna—each have general and specific [meanings]. If apprehending and cogitating is called citta, supporting base is called manas, and discerning is called vijñāna, these are general names, because all eight consciousnesses have these three names. If accumulating is called citta, cognitive reflection is manas, and discerning coarse [features] is vijñāna, these are specific names, belonging respectively to the eighth, seventh, and sixth [consciousnesses].
