按彼論云：意者謂從阿賴耶識種子所生還緣彼識，我癡、我愛、我我所執、我慢相應。或翻彼相應，一切時恃舉為行，或平等行與彼俱轉，了別為性。

Consulting that treatise, it says: 'Manas means that which arises from the seeds of the ālayavijñāna and takes that consciousness in turn as object, associated with self-delusion, self-love, self-and-mine grasping, and self-pride. Or, reversing those associations, its activity is haughtiness at all times; or it operates together with that in equal activity, having discernment as its nature.'
